Hearts and Hands Helping Haiti

In, A Tales Of Two Cities, Charles Dickens once wrote:  “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness . . . it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” Even though these words were penned well over a hundred years ago, they describe so well our most recent days.  Last week’s earthquake in Haiti has made the world a different place.

We have all watched in stunned disbelief as video glimpses of the earthquake have made their way across our computer and television screens. We have prayed for our friends who were present there when the quake occurred. Most have returned to us as we hoped and prayed. Others, like our friend Sam Dixon, will come to us soon, but not as we had ever dreamed.

The people of Haiti have experienced a life-altering event and things will never be the same there. In many ways these are, “the worst of times”.  But in the midst of this tragedy there have also been great signs of hope. One of the most tangible signs of God’s grace has been your response. The congregations of the Raleigh District have banded together in response to this devastation in life-changing ways. Over 18 tons of medical supplies and food items, health kits, sheets and towels have been received, weighed, packed, and soon will be shipped to aid our brothers and sisters in Haiti.

Special thanks to the congregation of Horne Memorial UMC for helping us to spearhead the response. Horne Memorial member, Bev Dew, has made the warehouse space available for our use. Jo Elaine Harris, our District Mission Advocate, has worked tirelessly and joyfully to help us organize the work, and maximize the impact.  Other clergy from the district have invested hours of time and energy in the cause. Members of our congregations have made themselves available and keep coming back for more.

I write to the clergy of the district asking that each one of us find the time to serve at least one four hour shift this week at the Clayton location. There are 90+ clergy in the Raleigh District. Elders and  Deacons and Local Pastors, Provisionals and those in full connection have an opportunity to strengthen the effort. Maybe this week’s staff meeting can be a working meeting as you help in packing the items donated. I am asking each one of you to join me in making this a priority. The warehouse, as noted in previous e mails is located in Clayton. We also need clergy to continue seeking donations from your congregations and the people of your communities and neighborhoods. What a great opportunity to ask those not yet connected with our churches to join us in the effort. Most of all we need to offer our hearts and hands at Christ’s disposal.
Together we can help the people of Haiti and serve Jesus in a significant way. I look forward to serving with you.

In Christ,

Jon(the Methodist)
